TASK 3 - LESSON PLAN

Venice Mask Carnival”

Level : Intermediate

Class : 4 Alpha

Theme : Values

Time : 80 Minutes

Language Content : Simple Past Tense

Aims : By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1) Practice their reading skills by identifying main ideas of each paragraph using information from the website.

2) Practice their writing reading skills and understanding of a reading text by doing answering comprehension questions using information from the website.

3) Practice their listening & speaking skills through group discussion.

4) Practice their writing skills by writing an essay describing the celebration of the “Venice Mask Carnival” using information from a video.


Technical Requirements:

1. Two students per computer

2. Internet Connection

3. Web Browser

4. Overhead Projector

Preparation:

1. Locate the “Venice Mask Carnival Website”.

2. Browse through the website to make sure it is suitable for the students and able to gauge their attention & interest.

3. Prepare worksheet based on the information in the website.

Procedures:

A) Set Induction (5 minutes)

1. Teacher recap previous lesson

2. Teachers introduces topic of the day.


B) Development (70 minutes)


Activity 1


1. Teacher asks students to choose a partner, seat quietly in pairs and ready for today’s lesson.

2. Teacher plays a video of “Venice Mask Carnival” and asks students to pay attention and enjoy the video. (5 minutes is allocated for this section)

3. Teacher asks students to describe what did they see from the video and their opinion regarding the celebration.

4. Teacher instructs students to browse the following website (http://www.carnivalofvenice.com/argomenton.asp?cat=2) for further information about the carnival.

5. Teacher instructs students to read the article from website and try to guess what the main ideas are. Next, teacher introduces and explains about main idea and distributes handouts (examples of main ideas) to the students.

6. Teacher allocates 15 minutes for students to complete the exercise 1 and teacher discusses the answers with students.

7. Next, teacher asks students to read the article on the website again for better understanding. Teacher distributes exercise 2 on reading comprehension for students to complete in 15 minutes. Then, teacher discusses the answers with students.


Activity 2


1. Teacher instructs students to form 6 groups and sit according to their respective groups.

2. Teacher plays the video for the second time and teacher instructs students (in group) to discuss / describe what they see from the video.

3. A representative from each group will then share their findings to the whole class and teacher asks the other students to jot down any ideas which interest them from the presentation.


C). Conclusion (5 minutes)

1. Teachers recap the lesson on the “main ideas”.

2. Teacher incorporates moral values.


Follow-up activity

Students are asked to write an essay about the “Venice Mask Carnival” using points they jot down during class period and teacher suggests students to visit http://venicexplorer.net/carnevale-di-venezia/index.php to give them more ideas and needed information for their essay.
